The Foley factory was let to a partnership which included John King Knight who eventually became the sole owner in The intention was to develop the Foley China side of the Wileman business, with an emphasis on developing export markets. The industrial revolution meant that transport and international trade was now much easier than ever and Wileman and Shelley were quick to understand the opportunity this presented. Frederick Rhead was recruited in He was appointed Art Director and produced some of the most innovative and creative work that ever came out of the Foley Works. Frederick Rhead is most famous for the Intarsio and Urbato ranges, but he also contributed to many of the patterns used for Shelley table wares of the same period.

A complete refit of the factory followed and saw the launch of a new shape, Quail for china. Her post-war patterns, like those pre-war, drew their inspiration from nature and included Teazle, Wild Strawberry, Sea Anemone and Whispering Grass, while popular s patterns continued to be made. Sadly a tragic fire in halted production for nearly a year, but a merger with R. Plant in gave Susie Cooper the opportunity to step up china production while phasing out earthenware, for which demand had declined.

Though at first regarding the change as a challenge, she eventually grew disillusioned by the impersonal nature of working in a huge organisation and many of her designs failed to reach the production stage. Production of earthenware ceased shortly afterward. The Susie Cooper earthenware produced between the early s and includes wall masks, figures, art pottery and decorator items, but best known are the collectable tableware decorated using freehand painting, banding, sgraffito, lithography, and aerography.

Tableware shapes include the famous Kestrel introduced in and still in production in Curlew , Rex, Falcon , and others. Patterns of the early s echo those developed at Grays — bold floral motifs, banding and geometric designs. By the mids the decoration had changed from the vivid geometric to more subtle floral and banded decoration.
